Donegal, The Diamond in 1958

Amazing how much the Diamond has changed since this photo was taken in 1958 the buildings in the background are the same. This is a great full colour photo from that era of what I assume are Gypsys on the Diamond, maybe during Market Day?
Thanks to Nick The Batman on Flickr! :)

Donegal's Cargo Defenders!

Cargo Defenders

A County Donegal firm, Cargo Defenders, are producing tools to better secure tractor trailers with curtain sides and/or box trailers. HGV Ireland has an article about the company and their products:

The founders of the company are from Inishowen and received start-up capital and other prizes from The Dragon Factor.

The Dragon Factor, brainchild of the voluntary committee at Craoibhin, was inspired by the success of RTE’s Dragon’s Den. The committee launched this idea earlier this year in hope of injecting new optimism into the local economy, in some small way.
Inviting the people of Donegal to come forward with their ideas with the prospect of starting their own business, applicants were asked to think about the market they are operating in, who their customers are, how they are going to generate income, what makes them different, what the costs are, both once-off start up costs and first year operational costs and where they want to see their business idea in 12 months time.
Read more about The Dragon Factor at their Web site at:
I think this is a great way to encourage and promote local businesses.

Where to order Gifts for Delivery in Ireland

For many of us expats it can hard to get presents for family in Ireland. Internet shopping has made it easier to buy gifts for friends and family in Ireland and have these gifts delivered. This list is gleamed from a posting on Reddit.

I've separated this into Irish and non-Irish sites and then individual categories.

Irish Sites

Books

Easons

Free shipping over €10:

Electronics

Elara

Based in Dublin, order online only, free delivery or pick up in person:

Gift Baskets

Jewelery

Button & Bow Factory, hand-craft by Irish artisans or something:

Pharmacy and Gifts

Cara Pharmacy.

Based on West coast, can pick up items in shops or pay for delivery, they have locations in Donegal Town and Bundoran:

Phone Cases

T-Shirts

Hairy Baby, Irish themed humourous T-shirts:

Videos

RTE

Irish TV shows etc, also including Irish related books.

Non-Irish sites

Use Parcel Post to get UK or NI shipping rates. This is useful if you live in Ireland and are near a Parcel Motel office, basically they will provide you with a UK PO Box and then delivery your packages to one of their Irish offices for fee.

Books

Book Depository, free shipping world-wide including Ireland. Often their prices are lower than Amazon.

Everything sites

Sites that sell everything, from books to electronics to clothing to toys etc.

Amazon

During the checkout process select Super Saver Shipping to get free shipping on all or many items to Ireland but only if your order is over 25 pounds sterling:

Ireland's best Carvery is in Donegal.

Harvey's Point Sunday Carvery has been voted the best Carvery in Ireland. Harvey's Point is situated on the shores of Lough Eske outside of Donegal Town.

From the Donegal Democrat:
Carving the Meat

Harvey’s Point made it through a six-week long public vote, before a team of mystery shoppers led by Head Judge and Business Development Chef at Unilever Food Solutions, Mark McCarthy, selected them as one of just 24 finalists. Harvey’s Point then beat off stiff competition from its rivals to be crowned Ireland’s Great Carvery Hotel of the Year 2013 at the Dublin awards presentation.
Read more at the Democrat, and reviews from Tripadvisor. Remember, the Carvery is only on Sundays and it does be busy, phone ahead for a reservation:
  • Call 074 9722208 if your inside of Ireland.
  • Call + 353 74 9722208 if your phoning internationally.
Details about the Carvery are available at Harvey's Web site at:

Here's a blurb about the tour:

Two Irish friends Sean Needham and Niall Rainey travel from Denmark where they live for a double headline tour with their respective bands. This is a tour to promote Sean's 'Red Lake Band EP' and Niall's debut album 'Roll on Someday'. After sharing the bill on concerts in Denmark Sean and Niall decided to take their multinational bands for a road trip to remember around Ireland. As they fly in for 6 days to play 6 gigs, the tour has been nicknamed 'The Red Bullet Tour'. If you want to see "two great live acts with a passion for performance" then don't miss this double headline show. Musicians playing on the tour include Christian Worm (guitar), Jimmy Weston (drums) Eamonn Rainey (bass/vocals), Steve Green (Sax/keyboard) and Sune Grip (guitar).

SEAN NEEDHAM & THE RED LAKE BAND bring their blend of ‘upbeat folk rock’ to Ireland this July to celebrate the 'The Red Lake Band EP' release. The live show offers uplifting melodies, meaningful lyrics and rocking tunes. The band is a mix of Irish, Australian, Danish and English musicians.

Along with songs from 'The Red Lake Band EP' the set will include songs from Sean's earlier albums 'Time is a Friend’ and ‘Loosely Based on a True Story’ which have earned Sean national airplay, a licensing deal with Sony and support slots with major artists including Tracy Chapman and Diana Krall. www.seanneedham.com
And a video! :)

Engine on Passanger Crusie fail in Killybegs.

Cruise ship visiting Killybegs has engine problems and the passengers had to be sent home:
"The 487 passengers aboard MV Voyager will today be taken back to Portsmouth, where the cruise started last Saturday. The Celtic Treasures cruise was due to leave Killybegs, in County Donegal, Ireland on Tuesday but remains there."

A Similar Cruise Ship Berthed at Killybegs

It sounds like some of the passengers weren't too enthralled about being stuck in Killybegs, or maybe it was because of the length of time they were there:
"She told The News: ‘We’ve been stuck here since Tuesday. Killybegs is a very small town, you can go round it in ten minutes."
I'm surprised the Cruise company didn't try and arrange some site-seeing tours as there's some great sightseeing around there.

Killybegs.ie has a list of all the cruise ships visting the port in 2013:
